Cradle to gate to cradle: why the factory gate is where circularity is won

A circular economy needs recovered material that's clean, traceable and ready to use again. That supply is decided at the factory gate, where CLN works.

For most of the industrial era, materials have followed a "cradle to grave" path: extract, manufacture, use, discard. The circular alternative, "cradle to cradle", treats every material as something to be cycled back into new products rather than buried or burned.

Manufacturers are embracing that idea, designing products to be reused and recycled. But designing for circularity is only half the loop. Someone has to recover the material, keep it clean and return it in a form manufacturers can use again. That's the work CLN was built to do.

The gate between the two cradles

"Cradle to gate" describes everything that happens to a material from extraction to the moment a finished product leaves the factory. That gate is also where the largest, most predictable waste streams appear: offcuts, trim, rejected runs, laminates, film and spent components.

At the gate, material is at its most valuable for recovery. It's sorted by process, its composition is known, and it hasn't yet been mixed with consumer waste or contaminated in a bin. Captured there, it can go straight back to the start of the supply chain as feedstock. Missed there, it's usually lost to landfill or incineration.

Why traceability matters

Recycled content is only as credible as the proof behind it. Manufacturers face growing pressure to show where their recycled material comes from, and material of unknown origin undermines confidence across the whole market.

Material recovered at the factory gate starts with an advantage. Its source, composition and volume are known before it's ever processed, so it can be documented from pick-up to finished feedstock.

How we close the loop

We work directly with manufacturers to capture post-industrial and hazardous streams at the source, before they're mixed or sent for disposal. Across our network, CLN companies recover aluminum from laminated and composite materials, process post-industrial plastic scrap, and safely deactivate and recycle regulated automotive components, with barcode tracking and destruction certificates where customers need them.

The result is domestic, documented feedstock that re-enters North American supply chains, completing the loop from cradle to gate and back to cradle. CLN doesn't just recover waste – we rethink what it can be.
